The bears are awake, at least two bear encounters in Coal Creek Canyon have been recorded. One was scat, the other was a bear taking down bird feeders. See more:

Remember to lock your car doors and keep nice smells out of them/the garage.

The hummers are back (at least the scouts are) and seem to have survived the big storm:

Yesterday there were two sightings of Bighorn Sheep in Coal Creek Canyon. Amazing, and first records of such an encounter up here.
Keep your eye peel between the long straight-away and the S curve and you may get to see him.

Friday was a day to remember and one that some local car owners would like to forget - although the memories, especially for the girls may be worth even more than the trashed Sequoia. Their big window looked right out onto the driveway where the car was parked.
The mom did everything right once she realized the bear was in her car. What we need to recommend is
- not leaving cars unlocked,
- maybe putting alarms on them if they can’t be put in a garage.
- snd, not allowing a car wash person to include nice smelling mat sprays!
Still, there were further wild encounters that day…
A canyonite from the upper canyon called as she had just watched a mt. lion take down a deer very close to her house. (isn’t that picture great!) She heard the growl, saw the great struggle, watched as another deer stood watching. Finally the lion dragged the deer down the hill out of her sight. She had a safe vantage point - a second floor deck.
The day continued with more Canyonites seeing two wolves - possibly wolf/dog hybrids - walking along the south side of Hwy. 72, about 4:30pm, just west of the Fire Station I. No collars, quite light colored, well groomed look. This is not the first time this summer that reliable people have sighted non-pet dogs that were definitely not coyotes.
Add to that the increasing number of turkey reports, the arrival of bucks to liven the lives of our deer herds, and even a Coal Creeker having a close encounter with a bull moose near Kremmling, made this one wild day in canyon country.
The elk seems to be avoiding some weather down at the bottom of the canyon. Enjoy them, and the colors.
