Bike to Work Day — June 24th

June 24th is Bike to Work Day. Coal Creek Canyon will host a breakfast station from 5:30 AM - 7:15 AM. Volunteers will be serving up a FREE BREAKFAST to neighbors choosing alternative transportation on June 24th at the CCCIA.

The Bears are awake…

The bears are awake, at least two bear encounters in Coal Creek Canyon have been recorded. One was scat, the other was a bear taking down bird feeders. See more:

Hummers are back…

Walk for the Park…

Rescheduled for April 18th (due to snow).

On Saturday April 4th, we’ll be joining together to walk 5 miles from Camp Eden to Wee Creekers via the back roads to raise money for the Park and Rec. District! Come and walk with us! We’ll have a shuttle service available from the Wee Creekers parking lot as early as 8:45 am with registration tables available at Wee Creekers or at the starting point on Camp Eden.

Registration is $20 for adults (18 and older) and $10 for kids. You can either pay your full reg. fee or choose to collect pledges from your adoring fans, to pay part or all of the fee. The registration fee will get you an awesome Walk for the Park T shirt and a chance to win fabulous prizes!

We encourage people to walk individually or form teams, walk quickly or amble slowly. It is all up to you! There will be Host Houses along the way where you can stop, rest, grab a beverage, mingle, and use the facilities if needed.

You don’t have to sign up early but the first 120 people will get their T shirts that day. (After we run out, we will simply order more but it does take 2 weeks) Just show up at Wee Creekers if you need to park or at Camp Eden around Aspen/Katie Lane if you are within walking distance or can get dropped off (we do not wish to negatively impact the neighborhood so please do not park up there) between 8:45 and 10:45 and you can walk with your neighbors.

Look for Pledge forms starting March 15th at the Kwik Mart, Coffee Shop, Canyon Liquors or Wee Creekers (or pick one up the day of). If you think you might be along the Walk route and would like to be a Host House (or for any questions at all) please call Linda at 642-2223 or 0273 and leave a message.

Prizes will be awarded as follows:

1) Fastest Individual
2) Fastest Team
3) Largest Team (# of people)
4) Largest Pledge sheet amount–Individual
5) Largest Pledge amount–Team
6) Slowest/Most Social Individual and
7) Slowest/Most Social Team.

Canyon Coffee Shop Re-opening 8th December 2008

A message to Canyonites from Brian Young:

As you know, recently, the coffee shop closed due to lack of financial viability. Darwin and Kristin have wanted to find creative means to keep the shop running for the good of the community, and they did not want to pass it on to someone who would be ignorant of the risks and challenges the business may present. Thankfully, Patti and Mallorie have stepped in to buy the shop and try it for six months. They are both experienced with the shop and will hit the ground running in giving it a go.

Their plan is the following:

. To re-open this Monday, December 8th at 6AM.
. To scale down and go simple - coffee, bakery and breakfast burritos.
. They will be open Monday thru Friday 6am-10:30am, Saturday and Sunday 7am-1pm (with lunch specials).
. They are also discussing the possibility of doing ‘take home meals’ for pickup for dinner.

There are unique challenges to running a business in Coal Creek Canyon. I would like to encourage you to make Coal Creek Coffee and Books part of your experience in the community. I believe strongly that our fine community needs businesses like this to foster a sense of togetherness and to build relationships.

December 15 (Nederland) - Community Meeting on Mountain Pine Beetle and Community Biomass Sort Yards

(Boulder County, Colo.) – The Boulder County Land Use Department has scheduled a forest health community meeting on December 15 in Nederland to discuss potential impacts of the mountain pine beetle epidemic on the region and to brainstorm potential locations for a community biomass sort yard to collect and dispose of local wood and slash.

In an effort to help private landowners deal with the impacts of the mountain pine beetle epidemic, Boulder County plans to open a community-use facility next year in the Nederland area that will accept tree branches and wood at no cost to residents. Boulder County and the Town of Nederland are currently working together to locate a suitable site. Public input is requested to help facilitate this process.

What:      Community Meeting on the Mountain Pine Beetle and establishing a community biomass sort yard near the Town of Nederland
When:      6:30 - 9 p.m., Monday, December 15
Where:    Nederland Community Center, 750 Highway 72 North

The meeting is being co-sponsored by the Town of Nederland, the Indian Peaks Forest Alliance, and Boulder County.

A primary objective of this event is to continue to educate the community about mountain pine beetle activity, the mountain ecology and current predictions on how this tiny bug will impact the Northern Front Range. A secondary goal is to provide detailed information about community biomass sort yards and why they are being set up along the Peak-to-Peak Corridor. Finally, Boulder County would like to tap into the local knowledge of the community in order to brainstorm potential sites for a community biomass sort yard in the Nederland area.

Boulder County Land Use recently hired Ryan Ludlow, a forest ecologist and park interpreter, to serve as the County’s Forestry Education and Outreach Coordinator. Ryan is spending much of his time meeting with residents and providing various tools and strategies for managing private land forest ecosystems to help mitigate wildfires, disease and insect outbreaks.
