Ellie’s Quest for the Cure - September 13th

Filed under: community — coalcreek @ 11:54 pm

Thank you all so much for your constant support of our family. Ellie would like you to join us again for her 8th birthday party at the 2009 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes on Sunday, September 13th. With your help, Ellie has donated over $10,000.00 to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications. For two consecutive years we have had the largest family team with more than 100 people participating on “Ellie’s Quest for a Cure” team each year! Once more, Ellie has asked for her family and friends to donate to JDRF in lieu of birthday gifts. Her deepest hope is for all those suffering with type 1 diabetes, as she is, to be free from the constant needs and fears that are associated with the diagnosis of juvenile diabetes.

Ellies Quest for a Cure - 2008

Ellie's Quest for a Cure - 2008

It has meant so much to Ellie and our family to have such a large support team. We are so grateful for your support and generous contributions which not only warm our hearts, but support the research that JDRF does to help find a cure for all the families like ours. These 4+ years with diabetes have meant many things for Ellie: enduring over 15,000 finger pokes to test her blood sugar, honing her math skills by becoming an expert carbohydrate counter, being constantly attached to her insulin pump and at times a continuous glucose monitor, and all the while, just trying to do normal kid things like going to school, dance lessons, and soccer games.

The long term prospects for Ellie’s health as she lives with this disease has underscored for us the importance of the work that JDRF is doing. Without a cure, her future could hold many of the complications common to type 1 diabetes including blindness, amputation, and even early death. Ellie has been fortunate to live in a time where she can wear a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump, thanks to the recent advances in research, but she still has to endure finger pricks and constant testing to stay alive. We look forward to the day when all these children can live a normal life, not attached to this life support system, and live happily ever after.

JDRF’s mission is to cure type 1 diabetes and its complications by funding research. This fall over 500,000 walkers across the country will be walking with the hope of raising over $100 million to advance this mission. With over 85% of each dollar raised going directly toward research, JDRF has been able to drive many research advances, and put a cure for type 1 diabetes within reach.

We are very grateful for your support in finding this cure, and joining us on September 13th.

Additional Slash Weekend Added… July 25th/26th 2009

Filed under: announcement, community — Tags: — coalcreek @ 11:51 pm

Given the obvious demand for slash disposal this year (it was a first that it had to close early due to being full) an additional slash weekend has been organized.

Times: 8:30 a.m. until 4:00p.m. [OR UNTIL FULL]
Location: Fire Station #2 - Hwy 72 & Camp Eden Road.

* Tree branches, bushes are the main goal for this slash collection. (The pile will be chipped immediately after collection.)
* Pine needles are allowed (so long as dumped out of any containing garbage sacks.)
* No stumps (unless chopped up into smaller pieces.)
* Log sizes should be (roughly) no larger than 8 foot long and 6 inches in diameter.
* Absolutely no trash, and no commercial dumping.
* If (say) you heat your home with wood and would like to take home logs that others have dumped, that is fine.
* There is no problem with actively beetle infested wood (since the wood will be immediately chipped.)

* Small Pickup - Bed High: $5
* Small Pickup - Cab High: $8
* Small Pickup - Above Cab High: $10

Request for Coffee Shop Feedback…

Filed under: community, issues — Tags: — coalcreek @ 10:36 pm

Letter from the Coffee Shop proprietors:

Dear Canyon Residents –

We need some input from our neighbors as to what you want from us as a coffee shop.

We had been told that staying open until 2pm and offering a lunch special would be much appreciated, so we obliged. However, the response hasn’t been what we had hoped for. We hired extra staff for the anticipated increase in business, but there hasn’t been that increase. We now need to reevaluate our decision and determine whether it is in our best interest to continue with the extended hours and lunches.

Last fall at the ‘emergency community meeting’ when Darwin and Kristin announced they were closing the doors, nearly every small group there suggested ‘take and bake’ dinners. We again obliged, with little success. Those who have used it have had only good things to say, so there must be a reason people aren’t taking advantage of this option.

In order for us to keep this business running, we need to know what the community wants/needs from us. Please send us any thoughts or suggestions you may have – we will give each suggestion our full consideration. We feel the coffee shop is a staple in a small community such as ours (and have been told so by many of you). We desperately want to make this work. We are just at a loss as to what is needed. We appreciate that you want us here, but until we win the lottery, we can’t just be there in case someone wants something to eat.

Please don’t misinterpret this as whining or complaining! We are simply asking for suggestions from those of you who care that we are here.

Thank you for your time and support. You can contact us at coalcreekcoffee@hotmail.com

Walk for the Park…

Rescheduled for April 18th (due to snow).

On Saturday April 4th, we’ll be joining together to walk 5 miles from Camp Eden to Wee Creekers via the back roads to raise money for the Park and Rec. District! Come and walk with us! We’ll have a shuttle service available from the Wee Creekers parking lot as early as 8:45 am with registration tables available at Wee Creekers or at the starting point on Camp Eden.

Registration is $20 for adults (18 and older) and $10 for kids. You can either pay your full reg. fee or choose to collect pledges from your adoring fans, to pay part or all of the fee. The registration fee will get you an awesome Walk for the Park T shirt and a chance to win fabulous prizes!

We encourage people to walk individually or form teams, walk quickly or amble slowly. It is all up to you! There will be Host Houses along the way where you can stop, rest, grab a beverage, mingle, and use the facilities if needed.

You don’t have to sign up early but the first 120 people will get their T shirts that day. (After we run out, we will simply order more but it does take 2 weeks) Just show up at Wee Creekers if you need to park or at Camp Eden around Aspen/Katie Lane if you are within walking distance or can get dropped off (we do not wish to negatively impact the neighborhood so please do not park up there) between 8:45 and 10:45 and you can walk with your neighbors.

Look for Pledge forms starting March 15th at the Kwik Mart, Coffee Shop, Canyon Liquors or Wee Creekers (or pick one up the day of). If you think you might be along the Walk route and would like to be a Host House (or for any questions at all) please call Linda at 642-2223 or 0273 and leave a message.

Prizes will be awarded as follows:

1) Fastest Individual
2) Fastest Team
3) Largest Team (# of people)
4) Largest Pledge sheet amount–Individual
5) Largest Pledge amount–Team
6) Slowest/Most Social Individual and

Thanks and we’ll see you Saturday, April 4th (snow or shine!)

Canyon Coffee Shop Re-opening 8th December 2008

A message to Canyonites from Brian Young:

As you know, recently, the coffee shop closed due to lack of financial viability. Darwin and Kristin have wanted to find creative means to keep the shop running for the good of the community, and they did not want to pass it on to someone who would be ignorant of the risks and challenges the business may present. Thankfully, Patti and Mallorie have stepped in to buy the shop and try it for six months. They are both experienced with the shop and will hit the ground running in giving it a go.

Their plan is the following:

. To re-open this Monday, December 8th at 6AM.
. To scale down and go simple - coffee, bakery and breakfast burritos.
. They will be open Monday thru Friday 6am-10:30am, Saturday and Sunday 7am-1pm (with lunch specials).
. They are also discussing the possibility of doing ‘take home meals’ for pickup for dinner.

There are unique challenges to running a business in Coal Creek Canyon. I would like to encourage you to make Coal Creek Coffee and Books part of your experience in the community. I believe strongly that our fine community needs businesses like this to foster a sense of togetherness and to build relationships.

Special thanks to Darwin and Kristin for their fine efforts, and all the best to Patti and Mallorie in this next step.

Sincerely,

Brian Young

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

December 15 (Nederland) - Community Meeting on Mountain Pine Beetle and Community Biomass Sort Yards

(Boulder County, Colo.) – The Boulder County Land Use Department has scheduled a forest health community meeting on December 15 in Nederland to discuss potential impacts of the mountain pine beetle epidemic on the region and to brainstorm potential locations for a community biomass sort yard to collect and dispose of local wood and slash.

In an effort to help private landowners deal with the impacts of the mountain pine beetle epidemic, Boulder County plans to open a community-use facility next year in the Nederland area that will accept tree branches and wood at no cost to residents. Boulder County and the Town of Nederland are currently working together to locate a suitable site. Public input is requested to help facilitate this process.

What:      Community Meeting on the Mountain Pine Beetle and establishing a community biomass sort yard near the Town of Nederland
When:      6:30 - 9 p.m., Monday, December 15
Where:    Nederland Community Center, 750 Highway 72 North

The meeting is being co-sponsored by the Town of Nederland, the Indian Peaks Forest Alliance, and Boulder County.

A primary objective of this event is to continue to educate the community about mountain pine beetle activity, the mountain ecology and current predictions on how this tiny bug will impact the Northern Front Range. A secondary goal is to provide detailed information about community biomass sort yards and why they are being set up along the Peak-to-Peak Corridor. Finally, Boulder County would like to tap into the local knowledge of the community in order to brainstorm potential sites for a community biomass sort yard in the Nederland area.

Boulder County Land Use recently hired Ryan Ludlow, a forest ecologist and park interpreter, to serve as the County’s Forestry Education and Outreach Coordinator. Ryan is spending much of his time meeting with residents and providing various tools and strategies for managing private land forest ecosystems to help mitigate wildfires, disease and insect outbreaks. For more information, visit: www.bouldercounty.org/foresthealth or email Ryan Ludlow at pinebeetle@bouldercounty.org or call 720-564-2641.
