Given the obvious demand for slash disposal this year (it was a first that it had to close early due to being full) an additional slash weekend has been organized.
Dates: July 25th and July 26th 2009
Times: 8:30 a.m. until 4:00p.m. [OR UNTIL FULL]
Location: Fire Station #2 - Hwy 72 & Camp Eden Road.
* Tree branches, bushes are the main goal for this slash collection. (The pile will be chipped immediately after collection.)
* Pine needles are allowed (so long as dumped out of any containing garbage sacks.)
* No stumps (unless chopped up into smaller pieces.)
* Log sizes should be (roughly) no larger than 8 foot long and 6 inches in diameter.
* Absolutely no trash, and no commercial dumping.
* If (say) you heat your home with wood and would like to take home logs that others have dumped, that is fine.
* There is no problem with actively beetle infested wood (since the wood will be immediately chipped.)
Fees for Remote Slash Collection Program
* Small Pickup - Bed High: $5
* Small Pickup - Cab High: $8
* Small Pickup - Above Cab High: $10
* Large Pickup - Bed High: $8

Fairy Lore says that Brownies are the keepers of the Feather of Hope, which is the means by which all hope on Earth is replenished and distributed. Brownies ride on birds and animals to travel and carry out their job of spreading hope.
Our Coal Creek Canyon Brownies have been very busy on a journey to build confidence through understanding our individual talents, our values, and how our relationships in our community are connected to who we are. We have been able to develop new talents, improve on talents and have a lot of fun with new experiences along the way. The next few months we will be working on our job of spreading hope through service. We’ll keep you updated about all that in the spring. For now, we are hoping to sell enough cookies to all experience camp and learning or improving our talent to ride animals while we do our work (probably not birds though). We hope to be seeing you at the Pancake Breakfast on Valentines Day. We’ll be there and at the Chili Fest. We will be at Kwik Mart on the morning of the 21st. Cookies cost 3.25 a box and if you’re on a diet, you can donate it to the Samaritan House (a Catholic Charity Family Based Short Term Homeless Shelter in Denver that also takes Veterans) or a Soldier in Iraq/Afghanistan.
We would like to thank the Mountain Phoenix Community School for accepting service for rent of our meeting space. We look forward to joining with you to make our community a better place.
We also have a big THANK YOU for the Artisan Guild for allowing us to provide gift wrapping service at the Holiday show. Special Thanks to all those who generously purchased peanut brittle and gift wrapping. This project gave us hope for future fundraising projects and community action projects yet to come this year.

A message to Canyonites from Brian Young:
As you know, recently, the coffee shop closed due to lack of financial viability. Darwin and Kristin have wanted to find creative means to keep the shop running for the good of the community, and they did not want to pass it on to someone who would be ignorant of the risks and challenges the business may present. Thankfully, Patti and Mallorie have stepped in to buy the shop and try it for six months. They are both experienced with the shop and will hit the ground running in giving it a go.
Their plan is the following:
. To re-open this Monday, December 8th at 6AM.
. To scale down and go simple - coffee, bakery and breakfast burritos.
. They will be open Monday thru Friday 6am-10:30am, Saturday and Sunday 7am-1pm (with lunch specials).
. They are also discussing the possibility of doing ‘take home meals’ for pickup for dinner.
There are unique challenges to running a business in Coal Creek Canyon. I would like to encourage you to make Coal Creek Coffee and Books part of your experience in the community. I believe strongly that our fine community needs businesses like this to foster a sense of togetherness and to build relationships.
Special thanks to Darwin and Kristin for their fine efforts, and all the best to Patti and Mallorie in this next step.
Sincerely,
Brian Young
Ellie’s Closet is proud to be a participant in the Princess Alexandra Fashion Show Fundraiser, Sunday 11/16 from 12:00 to 4:00pm at Red & Jerry’s Entertainment Center in Denver (www.redandjerrys.com). Alexandra is 2 ½ and has Leukemia. This fashion show and silent auction is an event to raise funds to help pay for her medical treatments. “Fighting childhood cancer has ups and downs, rare smiles and a lot of frowns. Having hope, wishing for a miracle, praying for a cure…,” quote from Alexandra’s Myspace page.
This event is a child fashion show and silent auction organized by local event coordinator and designer, Summer Jackson. Local designers & businesses including Ellie’s Closet have given their time and products to make this event special. Tickets are $15 each, children 12 and under are admitted free.
Ellie’s Closet, a local children’s wear company will participate in the fashion show as well as donate garments for a silent auction to raise money for Alexandra. Coal Creek Canyon’s Children’s Clothing Swap is almost here again! Have you finished going through all those outgrown clothes that you have been so kindly saving for the swap? Please bring your clean, gently used children’s clothing (size newborn to 14) and maternity clothes to the drop off at the CCCIA Hall, on Tuesday, October 7th from 4:00pm-7:00pm. Please do not bring dirty or ragged clothes. All the clothes that are donated will be used by local canyon residents or donated to local charities. We are also accepting other items related to children; but please do not bring games, toys or stuffed animals. Please contact Beth White (642-1608) if you have any questions or need a special drop-off time.
We hope you will join us on WEDNESDAY, October 8th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the CCCIA Hall for The Swap. There will be a voluntary $3.00 donation at the door, but if that is a hardship, please come anyway. We ask you take only what you can use and do not sell or use any items for consignment. We hope to see you there!
Beth White
